Chicago’s red light camera program is one of the oldest and largest in the country. It’s also one of the most controversial.

Getting a $100 ticket in the mail is a frustrating experience. The single best way to avoid one is to know the rules and the locations. We’ve built this guide to be the simple, one-stop tool you need.

Below is the full interactive map of Chicago’s red light cameras, followed by the fine, the rules, and a list of the “hottest” cameras that issue the most tickets.

The 2025 Interactive Red Light Camera Map

Red Light Camera 101: The Fine and The Rules

Here’s what every Chicago driver needs to know:

  • The Fine: $100. This is a flat rate for a red light violation.
  • Late Penalty: If you don’t pay the fine on time (within 21 days), it doubles to $200.
  • No License Points: A Chicago red light camera ticket is a civil penalty, not a moving violation. This is a critical point. It will not add points to your driver’s license and is not reported to your insurance.

How Do You Get a Ticket?

You can be ticketed for two primary reasons:

  1. “Running” the Red: Entering the intersection after the traffic light has turned red.
  2. “Rolling” the Right Turn: Making a right turn on red (where permitted) without coming to a complete stop before the crosswalk. This is the most common and frustrating way to get a ticket.

The “Hottest” Red Light Cameras (Most Tickets Issued)

While the city has over 140 intersections with cameras, a small few are far more “productive” than others. Based on 2025 city data, be extra cautious at these locations:

  • The #1 Earner: Lake Shore Drive and Belmont Ave. This single camera location has issued over $1.7 million in tickets in a one-year period.

  • High-Volume Areas: Recent data shows that cameras on the South Side issue significantly more tickets per camera than those on the North Side.

  • Other Notorious Intersections:

    • Stony Island Ave & 79th St
    • Wacker Dr & Lake St
    • State St & 79th S

You can find the raw list of all camera locations on the City of Chicago Data Portal.

A Map Is a Tool. An Alert Is Your Co-Pilot.

This map is the perfect reference, but you can’t check it while you’re driving. You need real-time protection.

That’s the entire purpose of the Ticketguard app.

Ticketguard runs on your phone and provides clear, audible alerts before you approach a known red light or speed camera. It’s the difference between seeing a camera at the last second and knowing it’s coming up ahead.

Don’t get caught by a “rolling right” or a fast-changing yellow. Download Ticketguard and drive with confidence.
